Nepal Day 3... Elephants and Crocodiles and Water Buffalos, Oh My!

And the Nepal discourses continue...

The day dawned with a thick fog soup covering the land. Claire and I were up early to start out on our first adventure of the day... an Elephant Safari!
Unfortunately we didn't see the white rhinos or the Bengal tigers but we saw a few items of wildlife... the national bird - Kingfisher - and some random weird deer.
The light filtering through the jungle was amazingly ethereal One of the guides showing how he gets on and off the elephant
Me and Claire on Lokie, our ElephantI loved how they decorated their elephants
When we were finished with our elephant safari, we were hanging around petting the elephants when I saw a local man feed one of the elephants something that looked like ritz crackers so I had the brilliant idea to ask our guide if I could feed Lokie the cookies I had left over from Breakfast (yes, we typically ate cookies for breakfast). So with a little (or a lot) of trepidation, Claire and I fed Lokie and her big sister cookies. The trunk would swing around and come after me like a snake. I'm not going to lie. It kind of freaked me out at first... as evidenced by my face the in the first picture.
But then it was just cool to feed the elephants. I was sad when we ran out of cookies.
That was one of my favorite parts of the whole trip.
Claire and I walked back to the village from the elephant safari and made a few friends on the way. They read us English out of their school books and decided to walk to school with us. That is until their dad showed up with the family car and took them all to school.
Our afternoon activity was just as cool as the morning... canoeing down the river in a hand dugout canoe and then hiking 2-3 hours back through the jungle. Luckily, the guide put me right behind him so I could hear everything he said. Unluckily, we had two French people with us on in the canoe that talked a lot and really loudly until the guide told them to shut up.
We saw crocodiles along the river while we were in the canoe...
And we were lucky to see two grown elephants with two baby elephants and a herd of water buffaloes cross the river in front of us heading to the elephant breeding center. It was like we were in a movie.
The hour long canoe ride was beautiful but really uncomfortable. When we got out, a man then got to take the canoes back up the river to the village.
Claire and I hiking back through the jungle and the elephant grass. We were on the lookout for the white rhinos but we didn't see any :(. I said I wanted to see a Bengal tiger but who was I kidding? I would have been the first to pee my pants if we saw one.
And finally, out in the jungle and our guide still has cell service.
