On our flight I think from MSP to Newark. We were bright and cheery... before the 34 hours of travel to get to Kathmandu.
After flying from MSP to Newark then a red eye to New Delhi, we had 10 hours to spend in the airport in India. We weren't sure what we were going to do with our time till it took us 3 hours just to get our new boarding pass for our connecting flight in the morning to Kathmandu. Then after a shared dinner of curried veggies, lentils and rice, we found these amazing sleeper chairs. When we went to sleep it the area was empty. It was a little disconcerting to wake up in the wee hours of the morning with lots of people around, probably watching us sleep. (photo courtesy of Claire)

We finally made it to Kathmandu, promptly got ripped off at the airport - a $21 tip for one guy to carry Claire's bag 200 feet to the car, and then made it to our hotel seen below. It may look a little sleazy but in reality this was pretty ok for Nepal.
After we got settled, we decided to head out onto the town to see what we could see of Kathmandu on a two hour walking tour south of Thamel to Durbar square. This stupa was one of the first stops on the walking tour. It was kind of like a mini Monkey Temple.
One of the statues at the temple
The joy of electricity in Kathmandu.
Another one of the random shrines on the street - covered in red Tikka powder and marigolds.
One of the shrines to the god for tooth problems. People pay off the god with coins nailed to the shrine.
The streets in Kathmandu
We were accosted by a "holy man" who gave us our tikka dots then demanded a lot of money.
The random cow wandering the street
Another temple on the walk near Indira Chowok with the street vendors selling outside.
We were so tired of being grabbed and begged from and all the dirt and noise we headed home for a rest and then to head back out. Our "nap" ended up being a really long nap and we slept till early in the morning.
