I was having dinner with some friends tonight and somehow they started talking about how everyone of us who served missions outside of the US were called fat by a native. SOOO TRUE! Talk about having a complex the whole time I was in the Philippines. When I'd go clothes shopping, I believe they all conspired against me and plotted what they were going to say... "Siyang. Di kasha sa iyo. (Sorry, this won't fit you)." Oddly enough, no one at the table tonight was what I would consider large by any stretch of the imagination. So apparently, in other cultures, they just say it like they see it... talk about filter-less conversations. American's are usually pretty good about filtering what they say in polite conversations. Like me, for example. I usually have an ultra-semi-sonic-high-frequency filter on. Well, sometimes. Sometimes, I let most of the filter go, but not usually. I'm sometimes on my little brother's case about filtering his comments. Remember the primary song... Kindness Begins With Me. But in anyway does what we consider unfiltered actually mean that other cultures are unkind or rude? We might think so, but they don't. Who is right? So, if someone says something you think is kind of rude, just add a "ph" onto it. And, if you have to ask "Why ph?".... well... then you'll have to come up with your own kind of phat.
