Heart Break

The last few months for work I've been writing a booklet to help parents cope with having a child in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) - where the preemies and babies with problems usually go. I know... I am the LEAST qualified person they could have asked to do it. I don't have any clinical training, I had never been in a NICU, and last but certainly not least, I don't have ANY kids. So, I read a lot and wrote a lot and pulled together something that I hoped would work. One of the last few things to finish up the book was to take pictures of equipment in a NICU to help de-mystify all the strange things there. I finally found a NICU that would come in and let me take pictures and today I spent the afternoon touring a NICU in Minneapolis taking pictures.

It was such an amazing and heart breaking experience! Although we were there for the equipment, several parents let us take pictures of their children with the equipment as well. This little girl has a twin in the next room. What a difficult and heart rending experience this would be, especially during the holidays.
