A Blonde's Adventures in Car Maintenance

Sometime I can’t help having blonde moments, even if I can help that I now highlight my hair. I think it is inherent in the fact that I truly was a towhead for most of my life. So, with winter pounding on the door and my car in need of an oil change and the 30K mile checkup, I finally scheduled a service appointment at the local Wayzata dealership. I actually wanted to get it in before when I thought the warranty would be up. Of course I didn’t bother to look up exactly how long I had on my warranty, so I though 30K miles sounded like a reasonable number. Had I known I had till 36K miles, I probably would have put off the maintenance, not that that would have helped my blonde moment.

So, yesterday, I had quite a busy day scheduled but decided to drop off my car still for maintenance… because of course I thought I only had 120 miles left till my warranty expired. That was only a partial blonde moment. To make it to work on time, I dropped my car off at the dealership and asked for a loaner car. Since every other Wednesday I volunteer in our temple in St. Paul, I haul my extra stuff to work those days and then leave work at 4 to make it there by 5. Well, the dealership closes at 6 so I was just going to keep the loaner car overnight and pick up my car in the morning rather than driving in the opposite direction to pick up my car first before heading over to St. Paul.

Everything went as planned and I got my little loaner… which was an experience all by itself… the dealership didn’t have their own loaners so they contract out with a rental car company so they came and picked me up and took me to the rental car place and then I had to sign paperwork and everything and what do they give me?!? A Chevy Aveo. I didn’t even know that they still made cars that didn’t have automatic locks or windows or mirror adjusters. Really? It was like driving a tin can with a gerbil under the hood. So, if you are ever in the market for a sub-compact car, let me tell you from 25 miles of driving it, YOU DO NOT WANT TO BUY ONE.
Ok, back to my story.

So, I was at work and thinking about what I needed to do the rest of the day and how it would all play out when I realized… I am SO dumb! I left my house keys in my car at the dealership! Of course I only have one copy of my house keys. Have I ever bothered to get extra copies made just for an event like this? Of course not. That meant that I had to leave even earlier in the day to pick up my car… in the opposite direction… and then head to St. Paul… just so I could get into my house that night. All to find out that when I picked up my car they couldn’t fix the whistle in my fan. So, retelling the story doesn’t sound as “blonde moment-ish” as it really was. Believe me, it was.

Lessons learned: 1) take your house keys with you when you leave your car with someone else, especially if you plan on sleeping in your own bed that night, 2) don’t rely on just one key… make and carry spares, and 3) never, Ever, EVER buy a Chevy Aveo.
