The road to the Polochic started out with all signs of comfort. Really it was the charade before the real roughing it began. Had I remembered how much I didn't enjoy taking cold showers every day on my mission, I would have savored the luxury of the hot shower in the Barcelo hotel in Guatemala City just a little bit longer. But, I'm tough, I lived.
So we started our long journey to the Polochic region of Guatemala via charter buses. My friend, Sheila, was one of the trip organizers and we had a chance to catch up some on the ride from Guate to Rio Dulce where we stopped for lunch.

Let's just say that on trips like this, especially when long bus rides are involved, you learn some very interesting things about people you've never met before. I was, however, more than overjoyed to get off the charter bus onto a real Guatemalan transport - the mini van. Between 6 hours on the bus and lunch, I was ready to switch it up. 2 more hours winding up the mountains in the mini buses before we reached "home". I think this just may have been my last decent picture for the next 10 days, sitting in the mini van waiting to take off to the Polochic. I should have prepped better for it but at that point I was ready to go.
Advice for the Day: Although charter buses may seem cozy when you are crammed next to someone for an extended period of time, they will never be PRIVATE. If you wish any information to remain private, keep it in your head, not flowing out of your mouth where everyone around you can hear and now knows every detail about your life, especially the ones you don't want them to know.

Love the AFTD. I would imagine you didn't say much on the bus about yourself (taking your own advice of course). You never know who you're going to meet in a situation like that. Sounds like good times.
