Can You Belize?

I can't believe I forgot to blog about Belize! Here's a quick rundown of the trip.

We decided kind of last minute when we were going to leave Guatemala... Like coming out of Tikal, packing bags, and heading out on a bus within 30 min last minute. The rest of the bus/mini-van were headed to the airport so they dropped us off at a cross roads where we caught the next vehicle to the border. We crossed about dusk and then headed to the next decent sized town to spend the night.
The next day we decided to sleep in a little bit and then catch a bus to Belize City then a boat out to Caye Caulker. Sheila and I just waiting for the boat to leave. The water in the Belize Cayes is amazing. Caye Caulker was a fun little island about 45 min boat ride from Belize City.
After reviewing several housing accomodations, we settled on the "penthouse" suite of this semi-dumpy asian hotel on Caye Caulker. However, we did have the whole top floor to ourselves with a huge patio and great view of the east and west side of the island (yes the island is that small)
That night we decided to rent bikes for a few hours and explore the island. There were just the three of us - Sheila, Spencer, and me
Dinner on the beach that night... Yes, it was REALLY windy
Me and Sheila inside the restaurant as we are waiting to pay for dinner
Morning view over the island from our penthouse. The yellow building on the left serves as the health clinic, library, city council hall, and I think some other things too

We decided the next day that we were going out snorkeling and manatee watching. Not sure why I agreed to a whole day excursion on the water since I'd been sick for 3 days by then... something I picked up in Tikal. On our way out to manitee watch. This is the next Caye down - Lighthouse Caye. It is a private island and apparently it costs $1,000/night to stay there.
Honeymoon Island and mother-in-law island. You can spend your honeymoon in complete isolation with just your spouse for only $50/night. And if your mother-in-law wants to come along, there is always the little house on stilts on the left of the picture. This is all according to Mario, our guide.
Mario, our guide for the day. He was pretty fun to chat with while the rest of the people were out snorkeling and I was relaxing trying not to be sick.
Driving through the mangroves
A manatee! It was so fun to see them up close. It was hard to get a good picture of them though.

Caye Caulker is one of my very favorite places in the world! I am so glad you found it!
